APPRENTICESHIP GRANTS
Skilled Trades Ontario
The government of Ontario has established Skilled Trades Ontario, a new platform replacing the Ontario College of Trades in order to simplify and transform the skilled trades and apprenticeship system in Ontario. ECA Ottawa works closely with Skilled Trades Ontario and The Ministry of Labour Training and Skills Development to support electrical apprentices in preparing for their future. If you are a registered apprentice with us and have yet to register with Skilled Trades Ontario, you should do so HERE
As an electrical apprentice with us you may be eligible for the many provincial and federal supports including:
- Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women
- Apprenticeship Incentive Grant
- Apprenticeship Completion Grant
- Employment Insurance for apprentices
- Tools Grant
Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women
The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women is a taxable cash grant of $3,000 per year/level up to a maximum amount of $6,000 per person. To be eligible for a level 1 grant (completion of basic schooling), you need to have been registered as an apprentice for at least 12 months, and at least 24 months for the level 2 grant (completion of intermediate schooling).
Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG)
The Apprentice Incentive Grant (AIG) is a taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year or level, for a lifetime maximum amount of $2,000 per person. To be eligible for a level 1 grant (completion of basic schooling), you need to have been registered as an apprentice for at least 12 months, and at least 24 months for the level 2 grant (completion of intermediate schooling). To apply for the Incentive Grant and/or the Incentive Grant for Women, ensure that you have the following supporting and personal documents
- Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Your apprentice ID number
- Bank information for direct deposit
- A copy of your official Confirmation of Progress for the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (E-mailed to you by Ontario.ca)
Apprentice Completion Grant (ACG)
The Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) is a one-time taxable cash grant lifetime amount of $2,000 per person for registered apprentices who complete their apprenticeship training and obtain their journeyperson certification.
To apply for the Completion Grant, ensure that you have the following supporting and personal documents.
- Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Your apprentice ID number
- Bank information for direct deposit
- Copy of your Certificate of Apprenticeship (A completion interview at our office needs to be completed before you obtain this certificate)
- Copy of your Certificate of Qualification (Obtained upon completion of the Certificate of Qualification exam)
Employment Insurance for Apprentices
You may be eligible to receive Employment Insurance benefits while unemployed and attending a course. For more information on applying for EI while in basic, intermediate, or advance school click on the following link.
Tools Grant
- Completed level basic at Algonquin or La Cite Collegial
- Have a registered training agreement
- Been registered as an apprentice for at least 12 months
